This is a photo of a clothes moth larvae. It is the small object that looks like a grain of rice in the middle of the photo. The customers were alerted to the problem when adult moths where found in various parts of the house.
To remove an infestation of moths the source of the food of the larvae needs to be found. The adult moths don't cause any damage, the larvae on the other hand are eating machines. In the particular case the owners had just moved in and the house had just had its carpets changed.
There were no stored or old clothes and the only area that had old carpets were in the airing cupboard and under stairs cupboard. On turning the carpet over moth damage was clearly present on the carpet. Silk cocoons were found down the cracks of the boards and larvae inside. The cracks of the boards were cleared and a residual spray was applied to treat the effected area.
