Another series of rat chew holes and burrows.

This is a rat burrow going under a chicken house.

This is a rat chew hole into the chicken house itself.

Larsen trap
11/25/2012 8:53:31 PM
This is a Larsen trap. It is used to control problem magpies. In this case the magpies have been stealing eggs from free range chickens. The trap is baited with eggs and is checked daily both by myself and the customer. The trap has a bowl of drinking water for any magpies that are trapped.

Rat Burrow
11/24/2012 10:11:07 AM
A rat burrow under a doorstep. Rats are now becoming more obvious as food in the environment becomes more restricted. This burrow has been created in the last few weeks and is clearly used daily.

Wasps Wirral
11/23/2012 6:39:25 AM
Another late wasp nest treated yesterday. The wasps have been coming in through the roof into the kitchen/conservatory.

This is a close up of one of the wasps in the kitchen. Its a male common wasp.

This series of photos is to try and give an idea of how many wasps were in this nest. It was a very windy day yesterday so the wasps were more dispersed once the nest was treated. They were extremely aggressive and spread over a large area. The nest was just above the white PVC. If you look closely the wasps can be seen against the roof tiles.

I was very surprised to find wasps still doing so well so late in the year. Larger wasp nests are capable of surviving when the weather gets cold as long as enough food is available.

mouse tracks
11/22/2012 7:57:31 AM
This photo shows mouse tracks following the line of the mortar between the bricks. This happens when mice habitally use a regular path. The black smear is made up of dirt, grease from the fur and urine. It is an indicator of a long established infestation.

This photo shows where the mice go up into the ceiling. The building itself is an outbuilding in a commercial yard containing electrical meters.

This customer has now arranged to have regular pest control service visits to control and monitor rodents on his property.

mouse under floor boards
11/20/2012 6:56:38 PM
A customer called me out today for mice. Over the last few weeks she had found mouse droppings in her kitchen and behind the couch. Now she had noticed a funny smell in the bathroom and decided now was the time to call in pest control.

An inspection of the house reveled droppings in the kitchen, lounge, garage, bathroom and roof void. The smell was coming from behind the bath panel. On removal of the panel hundreds of droppings were found but no signs of anything else.

The house had an access point for under the floor boards on the landing. After pulling back the carpet on the landing a mouse hole was found going under the floor boards.

On removal of the boards a mouse nest was found under pipework and a central heating pump. The nest was made of toilet paper dragged in from the bathroom (the pink debris to the side of the pump).

Looking down under the floor boards I could see the cause of the smell. A dead mouse about 3 metres away (difficult to make out on this photo). The dead mouse and nest were removed and replaced with baits to monitor/control any further mice in the house. All other areas were baited also.

A close up of the dead mouse before it was removed from under the floor boards.

squirrel traps
11/20/2012 8:45:39 AM
Squirrels trapped in the call I posted about the other day. The traps were emptied and reset last night.

I expect to catch at least another couple of squirrels. The housing estate is currently plagued with them. They destroy the bins in search of food and enter roof spaces to nest. A real problem for the locals.

The problem starts with people feeding them in public parks during the warm months and creating a population explosion. When the colder months come people don't venture out to feed them anymore creating an over populated environment. This means the squirrels only alternative food source will be out of bins from close by houses.

Galapogos Islands

The story of the war against the rats in the Galapogos Islands. They plan to air drop rat bait onto the 19 islands to exterminate the non native rodents.

Squirrels in the bins
11/18/2012 12:15:51 PM
I attended a call yesterday for squirrels. The squirrels have chewed through the customers bins.

I set up squirrel traps around the garden. As I set up the traps the squirrels were still approaching the bins to feed. So I sat in the corner of the garden with my rifle. In the period of an hour I managed to shoot 3 squirrels. The traps were set and return visits will be made to clear the rest of the squirrels.

This photo shows the targeted bins, the traps (one by the fence and one by the house) and a dead squirrel and the rifle that shot it.

Bedbug treatment
11/17/2012 10:58:14 AM
Another bedbug treatment yesterday gave me the opportunity to take a few more snap shots.

This photo shows how much work has to go into treating all areas of the room. The bed has to be stripped. The mattress treated with insecticide that is specific for soft furnishings and mattresses. The bed base turned over so between the slats can be treated. The carpet and skirting boards treated with residual insecticide. All furniture in the room treated thoroughly. The paper backs behind the mirror have been treated with insecticidal dust.

This is a photo of a bedbug behind the mirror.

This next photo shows how draws in a cupboard are treated. Insecticide in an aerosol formulation manages to penetrate further down the draws runners than a coarse spray insecticide.

The customer had also seen bedbugs in other parts of his flat. Either crawling in the carpet or high on the walls. The full flat was treated.
