Wasp nest October
10/19/2012 5:34:02 PM
A good sized nest found in a roof space today.

The mist in the second picture is a fumigant. Due to the inaccessibility of this nest (small access hole and low beams) I couldn't wear a full bee suit. I used a fumigant to slow the wasps down if they exploded into action. Of course I had to wear a respirator to prevent me breathing in the fumigant.

The rod running to the nest is an extendable lance with a canister of insecticide on the end. The insecticidal dust is injected into the nest to kill the wasps.

tree ivy
10/18/2012 7:16:29 PM
A call out for a wasp nest at a domestic property turned out to be a tree ivy covered in all sorts of insects. They are attracted to the plant by the late flowering blooms.

The customers garage was entirely covered by the plant. The entire roof surface was in flower and in full sun. Perfect for hungry insects.

People often assume there is a wasp nest due to the huge amount of wasps visiting the plant.

Lots of insect species are attracted to the flowers. These include wasps, bluebottles, muscids, hoverflys, butterflies and many many more species.

There was no charge for this customer as no treatment was carried out.

rodent removal
10/18/2012 9:24:36 AM
Unfortunately some rodents die in hard to access areas after a baiting program. In this circumstance a funny smell was noticed from under the bath.

On inspection 2 dead mice were removed from behind the bath panel.

This is a photo of the inspection kit I used. Long reach pliers, strong LED torch, gloves, flexible inspection mirror, screw driver to remove the bath panel and a degradable bag to put the rodent carcasses in.

Low air brick
10/17/2012 9:08:41 AM
Wasp nests are still a problem even though the temperature at night is dropping quite low. This nest is in a low air brick. The air temperature when I treated this nest was 10o C.

Its getting close to the end of wasp season. This maybe my last of the year.

Liver Building and Toisa Warrior
10/15/2012 2:54:27 PM
Working close to pier head today gave me the opportunity for a couple of tourist photos.

The iconic Liver Buildings.

The Toisa Warrior. A cable installation vessel used in the offshore wind industry. Its tasks include lift capabilities, dynamic positioning etc.

Rather fascinatingly you can find out where ships are and where they are heading to just by inputting their names into certain websites.

Birds Nest with Mouse Hole
10/14/2012 9:53:06 AM
On a call yesterday I found a rather nice example of how animals will use any opportunity to occupy the gaps in the fabric of our homes.

This is an old bird nest in a hole drilled for an extractor fan. The hole is about 9 foot off the ground and behind a pyracantha bush thats forming a dense shade for the bird. The nest is probably from a blackbird. Its an ideal place for a nest as its warm from the house and protected behind a spiny screen. Its currently disused.

The nest itself can host many small insects that feed on the organic debris left in the nest. These insects can easily transfer to your house and start eating the fabrics in your house (carpets and clothes). This is often how the moths and carpet beetles that are seen in homes get in.

As I started exploring the birds nest I found a very interesting hole running through it. The hole is a mouse hole leading into the house. The mouse will have been exploring the pyracantha for food and found the birds nest and dug through it to gain entry into the house.

Mesh Proofing

Mesh proofing on a property in Warrington.

Proofing your house against rodent infestation does not have to be a costly procedure. The mesh in this photo cost less than £10 and there was a good amount left when the job was done.

Storm Bait Blocks
10/10/2012 6:11:26 PM
Over the past week I've been trialling a rodent bait on a persistant rat infestation at one of my calls. The bait is STORM with the active ingredient flocoumafen. So far its proved its palatability with the rats. The poison can take 10 days before it kills the rodents even though a relatively small amount can kill in a single feed. Its now just a waiting game to see if the rat population dwindles and dies.

I found this very interesting study online. I hope I have such good results.
