nasty surprise

A customers grand kids wanted the sun loungers out in their grans garden. Lucky the shed door was stuck so the gran got them out. As she pulled out the cushions that had been stored at the back a wasp nest fell out from between were they had been folded. The wasps came flying out and she got stung 4 times. A very nasty surprise.

Wasp season is very much on the way. I've treated lots of little nests in garages or sheds but this nest from yesterday had hundreds of active wasps. The wasps are still small (almost half the end season size) but extremely active. This nest was out in Cheshire in Barrow.

starlings nest

The corner of this house has become home to a family of starlings. They are a rowdy and noisy neighbour to have. The homeowner wants rid sooner rather than later.

The birds cannot be moved until after the birds/chicks have left the nest. The chicks do fledge quickly but the adults can start another clutch of eggs in the same year. Carefully monitoring of the nest is required to make sure the birds are out before it can be cleaned and proofed to prevent further access/usage.

Its been well over a month since I updated my Facebook and website blogs. The world has gone crazy for a certain type of bumblebee called the tree bee. An explosion of them happened about 2 months back and it seemed like every other house had them in the eaves.

They are a relatively new bee species to the UK. They were first discovered in 2001 down South. They have made there way up the country to be found in massive numbers this year due to the mild Winter and warm Spring.

They will of been originally found in this country until the last ice age pushed them out with all the other bee species. They however did not return with the retreat of the ice like the other bees. This puzzled naturalists as the UK habitat is perfect and the English Channel is no real obstacle for this strong flying bee.

Anyway this bee is certainly back to stay, nests have been so numerous this year that they made the papers on multiple occasions.

This was a squirrel treatment that turned in to a bee treatment. The homeowner has had squirrels in his roof space over the Winter. I was treating for them and noticed a few bees flying into one of the holes the squirrels had made. On the return visit just 2 weeks later the few bees had turned in to lots of bees!

Some more bumblebees from today. An easy treatment from the ladders. The bees are getting more frisky with these warm days. This nest had a good 30 bees flying around outside it. Another one just down the road in Woolton was exactly the same.

Rats have been making there way in to a house by climbing up a garden wall and walking along the eaves and under roof tiles. They have happily set up home in the roof space and go out to feed on food left out for chickens by a neighbour.

Honey Bees

More honey bee's! These little bees are so interesting to watch. They constantly fight and interact with each other. They really are a pain in the bum for me though. Honey bee's are protected and a license is required to have them removed. If you have honey bee's a beekeeper should try to remove them before anything else is done. They are possibly the most beneficial insect there is. A single nest can have 60000 individuals who pollinate the flowers and plants. They can only be treated by pest controllers if they become a hazard for the homeowners. In this case they are above the front door. Hopefully a beekeeper can remove them!

Pest Control Wirral

These little bumblebees have built a nest in the gap between 2 paving slabs. They were better protected before as a shed covered the slabs. In one of the photos you can see one of the bee's fanning the entrance hole trying to dry it out after the home owner soaked it with water for 10 minutes.

A day of bee jobs today. Until rained off. This photo was taken while waiting for the rain to stop. It is of a pub car park on the Wirral with wood pigeons having showers and baths at the same time in the torrential downpour.
